The fork of the South Fork.
This view looks north from the Pershing road bridge. At one time, the South Fork had itself forked -- into the West Fork of the South Fork of the South Branch of the Chicago river and the East Fork.... The East Fork had been remade into the Union Stock Yards slip. This was the worst segment of "Bubbly Creek," a fermenting stew of animal, vegetable, and industrial waste. The Forks of the South Fork, in little better condition than stinky quicksand, were filled in after the Central Manufacturing District had been established.
