Saint George church spire, 1990.
Saint George was the first Lithuanian church in the Midwest, making Bridgeport, for a time, the center of Lithuanian activity in the Midwest and perhaps the United States. (Chicago had grown to be the largest concentration of Lithuanians in the country.) Eventually the title of premiere Lithuanian neighborhood passed to the Marquette Park district of Chicago Lawn, and most now say that the title has passed to Lemont, Illinois a few years ago.
