The proprietors felt it important enough to include a picture of this
street sweeper in their promotional publication. In their own words,
"...in no other industrial center has the matter of grass lawns, flowers
around the buildings, boulevards, attractive buildings, and healthful
surroundings, received the consideration that has been given here.... the
District has its own street cleaning department, and maintains a force of
gardeners to care for its business boulevards." Part of the reason for
nice or healthful surroundings was to motivate the workforce by creating a
environment conducive to productive work.
